Upcoming activities
Taking into account lessons-learned from SEA-EU-NET 1, SEA-EU-NET 2 will particularly focus on the following objectives and activities:
Dialogue
To strengthen bi-regional and bilateral dialogues in scientific cooperation and to assist in joint identification of topics for collaboration under S&T funding programmes by linking back to the official policy dialogue on S&T cooperation between the European Commission (EC) and the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (ASEAN COST).
SEA-EU-Net created the ASEAN-EU Science, Technology and Innovation Days to provide a forum for dialogue in these fields between both regions. This annual event took place in January 2014 in Bangkok/Thailand for the first time and welcomed more than 500 participants from research, business and government. The next edition will take place in Paris in early 2015. Get yourself involved and find out more on www.stidays.net
Decision-Making
To report to policy makers in both Europe and Southeast Asia in order to incorporate recent political developments and to generally highlight opportunities for S&T collaboration within the political decision making process. The ASEAN-EU Year of Science, Technology and Innovation 2012 enhances the visibility of bi-regional activities and will pave the way to implement new ambitious bi-regional activities in Science, Technology and Innovation, being taken up by SEA-EU-NET 2.
Jointly Tackling Societal Challenges
To focus on joint efforts on a selected set of thematic areas, namely Health, Food security and safety, and Water management. In focussing on these topics, the project will do the following:
-
evaluate and monitor EU-SEA S&T cooperation in these selected fields;
-
run workshops to bring EU and Southeast Asian scientists together to develop scientific partnerships with a focus on innovation;
-
develop the next generation of scientists by providing fellowships which will allow bright young scientists to travel between the two regions to gain a better cultural and scientific understanding; and
-
develop new funding schemes to broaden and deepen the collaboration
These activities will help to facilitate the development and implementation of a coherent European-level approach towards international S&T cooperation with ASEAN in the selected thematic fields.
See our State of Play Report on the three thematic areas here!
Networking
To network different stakeholders (such as universities, industry, government, civil society and donors) in order to build bi-regional networks and to strengthen research capacity, building on the fruitful working atmosphere among the growing numbers of partners in the current project. To gain a broader momentum, SEA-EU-NET 2 will reach out to more researchers from both regions interested in collaboration, as already started by making use of alumni networks, but will also actively engage industry, civil society and donors.
Sustainability
To ensure that all activities deliver impact beyond the lifespan of the project in order to develop sustainable partnerships. National Contact Points (NCP), an increased information flow on EU-FP programmes to interested SEA researchers, mobility schemes and long-term institutional cooperation will ensure that all of the countries of Southeast Asia have the opportunity to develop meaningful research cooperation with partners in Europe.
