Food Safety - Critical Dimension of Food Security in Emerging Economies

Improving food safety is an essential element of improving food security, which exists when populations have access to sufficient and healthy food. The food on our table must be produced, processed and marketed safely to protect the consumers. As food trade expands throughout the world, food safety has become a shared concern among both developed and developing countries. The issue facing emerging economies is how to promote and regulate food safety in the growing modern food system without driving out the traditional activities that still serve an important economic function. Thus, developing nations are unable to participate effectively in the international institutions that have evolved to establish global food standards, and their ability to participate in and benefit from trade. To move forward, the food safety must be integrated along the entire food chain, from farm to table, with the three sectors, government, industry and consumers in sharing responsibility. This conference, therefore, will deliberate issues, challenges as well as technical and policy directions of food safety, especially but not limited to emerging economies.
